He grew up in Austin and attended Austin High School where he played the Trombone in the band, graduating in 1943. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served in the Pacific as an Aerial Armed Gunner on B-24's during WWII. Afterwards he attended Abilene Christian College, and then studied Engineering at Case Western Reserve College, and the University of Texas. For the rest of his life he remained an avid fan and backer of the University of Texas. Before he could complete his studies, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict where he flew on B 29's. Upon returning from Korea, he moved to Houston where he went to work with Shell Oil Company as a research chemist and later did research for International Consultants, Inc. Later he relocated back to Austin and opened his own business in Real Estate. He retired to Horseshoe Bay, Texas.
His wife of 32 years, Marian Louise Badgley Monroe preceded him in death.
He is survived by twin sons, Stacey Terence Monroe of Austin, Tracey Lawrence Monroe and wife Denise of Phoenix, Arizona; daughters, Patricia Lynn Cowan and husband Chris of Poetry, Texas, Deborah Kaye Harmon and husband Ron of Glade Park, Colorado; nephew, Bill Macdonald and niece Kathy Beth Stavinoha, as well as ten grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 8:00 a. m. to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 9, with funeral services to follow at 10:00 a.m. at Wilke-Clay-Fish Chapel with interment to follow at Lockhart City Cemetery. [Published in the Austin American-Statesman on 9/8/2005.]
