Martha Hathcock was the daughter of Dancy and Lucinda (Lawson or Lanson) Hathcock. Dancy Hathcock was born in North Carolina about 1795, lived in Elbert County, GA in his youth and moved to Madison Co., AL as a young man. He was enumerated in the Madison County census of 1815 and was married to Lucinda Lawson (b. 1795 in N.C.) in Madison Co., AL on 16 September 1816. Dancy Hathcock and his young wife Lucinda Lawson, moved to St. Clair Co., AL from Madison Co., AL between 1817 and 1820 and he lived there until his death at age 70.

Martha Hathcock married Robert White Crump on 11 Nov 1845 at St. Clair Co., AL (See attached marriage record). Robert W. Crump was one of 15 children of Silas and Sarah Hannah (Riggs) Crump.

The 1850 US Census of District 40, St. Clair Co., AL enumerated the household of 34 Y/O Robert W. Crump, a farmer born in GA, and his 29 Y/O wife, Martha (Hathcock) Crump, born in AL. Their children living in the household were: 4 Y/O Sarah Crump; 2 Y/O Pleasant Riggs Crump (check below for his somewhat famous history), and 10 months old Nancy Trump.

The 1860 US Census of Townships 14 and 15, St. Clair Co., AL enumerated the household of 46 Y/O Robert W. Crump, a farmer, and his 30 [sic] Y/O wife, Martha (Hathcock) Crump. Also living in the household were their children: 14 Y/O Sarah Crump; 12 Y/O Pleasant Riggs Crump; 11 Y/O Nancy Trump; 9 Y/O James C. Crump; 6 Y/O Sophronia Lucinda Crump, named after her grandmother, Lucinda (Lawson) Hathcock; 5 Y/O Marion L. Crump and 3 Y/O Hark Columbus Crump.

The 1870 US Census of Subdivision 39, Precinct 8, St. Clair Co., AL enumerated the household of 60 [sic] Y/O Robert W. Crump, a farmer, and his 53 Y/O wife, Martha (Hathcock) Crump. Crump residence was a household headed by 56 Y/O Barton Guest Crump, a farmer born in GA, and his 33 Y/O wife, Elizabeth (Gibson) Crump, born in AL. They had 5 children in the household at the time. Barton Guest Crump was a brother of Robert W. Crump.

The 1880 US Census of Greensport, St. Clair Co., AL enumerated the household of 70 [sic] Y/O Robert W. Crump, a farmer, and his 55 [sic] Y/O wife, Martha (Hathcock) Crump. Their children living in the household were: 32 Y/O Sarah Crump; 27 Y/O James C. Crump, a farmer; 25 Y/O Sophronia Lucinda Crump; 20 Y/O Cordelia E. Crump and 16 Y/O Henrietta L. Crump.

Martha's husband, Robert W. Crump, died in 1883 in St. Clair Co., AL and is buried there (Ref: "The Heritage of St. Clair County", 1998, p172).

Martha (Hathcock) Crump is last recorded in the 1900 US Census of Greensport, St. Clair Co., AL living in the household headed by her 36 Y/O son-in-law, Marion Hathcock, a farmer born in AL, and his 26 Y/O wife, Henrietta (Crump) Hathcock, who was Martha (Hathcock) Crump's youngest daughter. Living in the Hathcock household were their children: 13 Y/O Ulysses G. Hathcock; 9 Y/O Zola Hathcock; 4 Y/O William W. Hathcock and 3 Y/O Mattie Hathcock. Also members of the household were: Martha (Hathcock) Crump, the mother of Henrietta (Crump) Hathcock, as mentioned above. (No age was recorded for her on this census but I estimate her to be between 80-84 Y/O complicated by the many age enumeration errors involving all of her census records. Martha (Hathcock) Crump was also blood kin to Henrietta's husband, Marion Hathcock, in some way. Henrietta's 2 unmarried sisters, 38 Y/O Sophronia Lucinda Crump and 35 Y/O Cordelia E. Crump were also residing in the household. NOTE: The following information about Martha (Hathcock) Crump comes from Larry R. Hathcock, a Find A Grave contributor id #46935064, who states she was his great, great grandfather's sister. He states that she lived near Greensport, on the Coosa River, in Shoal Creek Valley. She was buried in an unmarked grave in the Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery just south of the intersection of Shoal Creek Rd and Macedonia Rd. (Thanks Larry R. Hathcock for this information.) The exact death date of 80+ year old Martha Crump is unknown. NOTE also: In the 1900 US Census, the household 2 doors away was headed by 46 Y/O James Crump, a farmer born in AL, and his 37 Y/O wife Ellen D. Crump, born in AL. James must have been close kin. NOTE: FAG contributor, Tim Hathcock, FAG id #50195946 reports that Martha Hathcock’s youngest brother, Francis Marion Hathcock (1837-1863) enlisted in August 1862, as a private in Co. E, 12th Regt of the Alabama Cavalry, CSA and died on 24 May 1863 in the Civil War. The 1860 US Census of Township 13, Range 3 East, Ashville, St. Clair County, Alabama enumerated three Hathcock households adjacent to each other. They were headed by Dancy Hathcock, the father, and his 2 sons, Alderson and William Hathcock. The 1860 household of 70 Y/O Dancy Hathcock, a farmer born in North Caroline and his 65 Y/O wife, Lucinda Hathcock, a housekeeper born in North Carolina. Also living in the household were their children, all born in Alabama: 27 Y/O Mahala Hathcock, a housekeeper; 25 Y/O Elizabeth Hathcock, a housekeeper; and 23 Y/O Francis Marion Hathcock (1837-1863), a farmer who died in the Civil War. FAG contributor, Tim Hathcock, reports he is the great, great, great grandson of Alderson Hathcock (Many thanks to Tim for his input).

The children of Robert W. Crump and Martha (Hathcock) Crump were:

One of Robert W. and Martha (Hathcock) Crump's children was Pleasant Riggs Crump. He was named after his grandmother, Sarah Hannah (Riggs) Crump and his uncle, Pleasant Riggs Crump (brother of his father, Robert W. Crump).

The story of their son's, Pleasant Riggs Crump (1847-1951), involvement in the Civil War, although exemplary, probably would have gone unnoticed except for his exceptional longevity, 104 years. He lived to be recognized as the last surviving Confederate Civil War Veteran. Among other notable events, he was at Appomattox Court House to witness the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee.
