She was a teacher at Berkeley High School and ventured on to become a social worker for the County of Alameda, retiring after 19 years of service. Iris was a talented pianist and a world traveler. She believed in staying fit and was an avid swimmer, golfer and tennis player. She served faithfully for over fifty years as an active member at Beebe Memorial CME Church and participated on many committees.
Iris Baker (Aunt Boots) was a joy to all who met her, her spirit filled with love and the joy of life. A loving aunt and friend to many. And so, so giving. Aunt Boots departed this life September 13, 2004.
She leaves to cherish her memory brother C.W.O. Harry Hollowell and wife, Thelma, of Leavenworth, Kan., brother Honorable Donald Hollowell and wife, Louise, of Atlanta, Ga.; her nieces, Nora Bailes of Newark, Calif., Elsie Hallaway, Elaine Bruce, Elverine Hamilton, all of Kansas City, Mo., Louise Jones of Seattle, Wash., Janice Hollowell of Leavenworth, Kan. In addition she leaves behind many grand- and great-grand-nieces and -nephews, and a host of other family and friends.
Iris was preceded in death by her husband, Master Sgt. George Baker, sister Corrine Patterson, and nephew Jay Oliver. An extraordinary light went out in Oakland, Calif. We will miss her dearly. Her spirit will be with us always.
