Manatee County High School graduate, 1952
Bradenton, FL

A lifelong resident of Florida, Ratsy was born in Fort Ogden and grew up in East Bradenton, in an area known in those days as Punkin Center.

In 1952, he graduated from Manatee County High School where he played football for legendary coach, Wheeler Leeth, alongside his best friend for life, Ed Culpepper.

Upon graduation, Ratsy entered the IBEW Apprenticeship Program and became a journeyman electrician.

On June 26, 1955 he married the love of his life, Peggy Annette Herring. They were happily married for 57 years, until October 28, 2012, when Peggy lost her battle with cancer. During their life together they raised three children, Bruce (Andrea), Rodney (Patti) and Terri McAllister (Carl). His family grew to eventually include 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

During his career as an electrician, Ratsy worked on large construction projects. These included skyscrapers in New York City, steel mills in Pittsburgh, nuclear and fossil fueled power plants in Alabama and Florida, where he was known for wiring lights atop the smokestacks. Later, he moved into management and was elected by his Local Union to positions of Assistant Business Manager of IBEW Local 915, and then Business Manager of the newly formed Local 941.

He took time away from the trade when and he and Peggy became realtors and then owned and operated a contract Post Office in East Bradenton. Ratsy returned to his tools to finish his career, retiring on his 62nd birthday.

Ratsy was a long time Mason and member of Manatee Lodge No. 31 in Bradenton. He was a Tank Commander in the National Guard and Vice-President and President of the Palmetto High School Athletics Boosters. At home in Parrish, Ratsy was also a gentleman farmer and rancher. He grew crops of citrus and black-eyed peas for market and raised cattle, pigs and chickens.

Ratsy is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his big brother Hendrick Reid (Libby) of Freeport, FL.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, December 21st at Groover Funeral Home at Mansion Memorial Park, in Ellenton FL and is open to the public.
