Robert Armstrong was the son of Harvey Albert Armstrong and Alice Janet Bryan. He was a Private First Class in the U.S. Marine Corps and was killed in the World War II battle for the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. His Home of Record was Hartford, Connecticut. Robert's ashes were interred at Pine Grove Cemetery on 8 Jun 1948. He was 21 years, 10 months, and 7 days old when he died.

Robert's New Hampshire death record and his Pine Grove Cemetery burial record show his last name as ACKERMAN. After his parents' deaths, he apparently went to live with his older sister Elaine (Armstrong) Ackerman and her husband Sandow Walter Ackerman in Connecticut. Robert's military history and the 1930 U.S. Census show the last name ARMSTRONG.
