He was a retired Army master sergeant with 29 years service and a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received the Purple Heart Medal with Oak Cluster during the Korean War and received numerous other medals for his service. He was also a retired captain with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, with 26 years service. A native and resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 83. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd., at 1:30 p.m. with honors by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office. Survived by his wife, Lynne Leah Thornton Lawrence; mother, Mary Wallace Thomas; daughters, Mishon Glisson and husband Timothy P., Shalon, Dee Lawrence Mathena, Leah Joy Lawrence and Clarice Lynette Lawrence; daughter-in-law, Ray Helen Lawrence; sons, Kevin Lawrence, Clarence Ray Lawrence Jr. and wife Tanya York Lawrence, Gerald Lawrence and Barry Lawrence; and granddaughters, Abby Glisson and Cynthia Miranda Mathena. He was preceded in death by his father, Elex Lawrence; and a son, Clarence Lawrence Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Raven's Outreach Center Inc., 923 Executive Park, Baton Rouge, LA 70806.
