Marton (Hungarian spelling) Beres was born in Bodony, Heves, Hungary, to Istvan (Stephen) and Borbala (Barbara) Farkas Beres. He came to the United States in 1905 and settled in Toledo, Ohio. He married Anna Toth on April 5, 1908, at St. Stephen's Church in Toledo.

Martin and Anna had 5 children: Anna Beres Barciz, Hazel Beres Charney, Stephen John Beres, Gilbert Joseph Beres, and David Michael Beres. Anna died in 1918 before David was a yr. old from the Spanish flu epidemic.

In 1920 Martin married Elizabeth Farkas Pinter, widow of Joseph Pinter and mother of 3 daughters: Helen, Mary, and Charlotte Pinter. Marton and Elizabeth added 2 daughters, Barbara Beres Korb and Rose Beres Wheeler, to their family, making a total of 10 children. Elizabeth died in 1923, and Martin in 1928.
