Bertha was born in Kentucky in 1893 to George A. and Annie Laura Littell Hawkins. By the age of 15 Bertha was married and had a son, Ralph. In the 1910 census she is listed as a widow and her last name is McGee. She was married to Alvin Everett Evins on August 11, 1924, in Arkansas.

Bertha and Alvin travelled following his work as a bridge builder before settling in the area of West Frankfort, Illinois. Bertha died at the age of 82. Her husband preceded her in death in 1970 at the age of 77. Bertha and Alvin share a tombstone (front and back) with her parents.
