SMART, Margaret Ann "Peggy" (Age 92) Longtime Pullman resident Margaret Ann "Peggy" Smart, 92, of Pullman passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 5, 2013. Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 13 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane. A memorial service will be held on September 24, 2:00 PM at the Pullman Presbyterian Church with Rev. Matthew McNelly officiating. Peggy was born on March 11, 1921 to Ralph and Eva (Bixby) Montelius in Spokane, Washington. She graduated from North Central High School in January 1939. After graduating from Kelsey Baird Business College she was employed in the insurance industry. Her first date with her future husband, Harold Smart, was on July 4, 1939, making that a favorite holiday for both. Harold and Peggy were married in the chapel at the Greenville Army Air Force Base on March 14, 1943 where Harold was stationed. After the war, they made their home in Spokane for many years, had a brief sojourn in Seattle, and moved to Pullman, New Year's Eve, 1966. They celebrated their 70th anniversary together this year. Peggy worked at the Downen Insurance Agency as controller until her retirement in 1986. Harold, a partner in the agency, retired shortly thereafter and the couple spent many summer days at their vacation home in East Hope, Idaho. They frequently vacationed in California and Arizona in the winter with friends. Cruising was a favorite pastime of both with the Alaska routes being a favorite of Peggy's. She was a wonderful lady, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a great-grandmother. She took great pride in caring for her family, and especially enjoyed baking. She always kept a full cookie jar! She will be missed terribly. She was a member of the Spokane Insurance Women's Association and the Presbyterian Women. Peggy was active in PTA and a Camp Fire leader when her children were young, a deacon of her church and a member of the local hospital Pink Ladies for many years. Peggy is survived by her husband, Harold Smart of Pullman; daughter Judy (Tom) Lees of Pullman and grandchildren Courtnie (Casey) Brazil and their child Hudson, and Kelsie Lees all of Spokane; daughter Jan (John) Schlotfeldt of Olympia and grandchild Dr. Katie (Dr. Will) Magee and their children Noah and "newborn" Magee also of Spokane. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers John and Robert Montelius. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Peggy's honor to consider the Pullman Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice . KIMBALL FUNERAL HOME of PULLMAN has been entrusted with funeral arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.kimballfh.com.
