Virginia Catherine Gilliam Daniels was affectionately known as "Miss Kitty". Some of you knew her as "Mom", some new her as "Meme" or "Grammy" (Grandma), some as "sister", some as "Auntie", some as neighbor and friend. To many of you she was your hair stylist. Most recently she worked at Totally Clipz until she retired at the age of 88. She was loved by all of us in different ways.
Kitty was born in Jenkins, Kentucky, to Ethel Marie Trail Gilliam and Thomas Alderson Gilliam on June 30, 1924. She was the fourth child but the first girl of a family of 7 children. In following years, her parents would have three more daughters, Irene, Billie, and Ina Mae. She also had three brothers, Douglass (died at 25 during WWII), Edward, and Jack. She was a coal miner's daughter during America's Great Depression. At the age of four, the Gilliam Family moved from Jenkins to Coal Mining Camp Allock in Allock, Kentucky. From there, the Gilliam Family traveled to Wayland, Kentucky.
When Miss Kitty was 18, the Gilliam Family moved to Wise, VA where she attended high school. A high school cheerleader, Miss Kitty was very popular and had many friends. From Wise, the family followed their father's employment. Leaving the coal mine, her father went to work in the Norfolk Naval shipyard located in Portsmouth, Virginia. Following in her father's footsteps, Miss Kitty left school and began working at the shipyard as a payroll clerk.
In Portsmouth, the Gilliam Family attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church where Miss Kitty gave her heart to The Lord and gained an interest in attending Bible College. In 1950, she graduated from Trinity Bible College and moved back to Virginia to live with her parents. Back at home, she began dating a young man who lived next door. His name was Kenneth Craig Daniels. Kenneth (Dick) Daniels and Miss Kitty dated for 6 years. They were married in November of 1957 and had their first child, Kenneth Craig Daniels, Jr.. The couple stayed in Portsmouth until they moved to Orlando, FL in the summer of 1960. In August of 1961, the Daniels Family introduced their daughter, Kathy Marlene Daniels into the world. Soon after they arrived in Florida, Dick and Miss Kitty opened various barber shops such as Style-A-Rama and Cuttin' Corner; family barbershops where they worked side-by-side, literally. Dick passed away on June 13th, 1993 and Miss Kitty continued being a hair stylist until she retired on her 88th birthday in June 2012.
Miss Kitty passed away on Tuesday, 3 September 2013 at 11:24am. She was home, with close family at her bedside, under the care of Hospice of the Comforter. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Bower, her son, Kenneth Daniels Jr., her grandchildren Jennifer and Jeremy Bower, and Robert and Marissa Rhodes, her sisters Irene Turner, Billie David, and Ina Mae Pierce of Florida, and one brother, Jack Gilliam who resides in Virginia.
