Christopher Columbus Redding: born Oct. 6, 1832 at Middleboro, MA, he was the second of six children born to Cheney Redding, a farmer, and his wife Mary (Barrows). According to a map of Middleboro the Redding family had a homestead on Purchade St., about halfway between Plymouth and Centre Streets.
Christopher was a 28 year-old Shoemaker from Middleboro, when he enlisted in that town on May 20, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Massachusetts Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. D. Per records he was 5 ft. 8 in. tall, with a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair. Christopher was recorded as "Present on all regimental muster rolls from August 1861 to December 1862. He was wounded in the hip at the battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862 and admitted to Hammond Gen. Hospital, Point Lookout, MD. He was discharged on March 25, 1863 due to lameness caused by his gunshot wound.
Christopher returned to Middleboro, MA following his discharge. He was married to Frances Lombard Perry in Portsmouth, NH in 1863, however, he evidently abandoned her as he migrated to California in 1864 and she remarried to Benjamin F. Thorndike at Newburyport, MA on Aug. 5, 1869. After residing in California, he removed to Oregon where he lived until 1866; Montana to 1870, Utah and Nevada to 1873, Idaho to 1874, and then permanently in Montana from 1874, where he worked as a Miner. Per the 1880 U.S. Census he resided at Upper Moose Creek and Highland Gulch, Deer Lodge, Montana and worked as a Placer Miner. He applied for an Invalid pension on Dec. 12, 1905 and received initial benefits of $12 per month, due to his being over 70 years of age at the time of his application.
Christopher, who was receiving a pension of $27 per month, died at his home, 17 South Main St., Butte, Montana on June 12, 1914 and was buried in the G.A.R. section of Mount Moriah Cemetery, Section F, Row 2, Grave 5.
