Godfrey "Fred" R. Lang, 84, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at Hays Medical Center. He was born Dec. 21, 1928, the son of Ignatz Jr. and Rosa (Weber) Lang, in Ellis.

On Dec. 30, 1952, Godfrey was united in marriage to Lillie Ann Augustine at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellis, after serving in the U.S. Army as artillery foreman during the Korean War.

He graduated from Ellis High School in 1946. Fred graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1957, going on to receive a master of science in elementary school administration in 1963. Godfrey dedicated his life to children. He was a teacher, coach and assistant principal at Miller Elementary School in Dodge City. As a new teacher starting out in Dodge City, he received the Outstanding Young Teacher award. During that time, he reorganized the Cub Scouts of America Sante Fe Trail Council in 1963, as well as serving as Cub Scout Master.

After teaching in Dodge City, he moved with his family to WaKeeney, where he served as principal at Collyer. From there, the family moved to Russell, where he was the principal of Simpson Elementary. In 1972, Godfrey was selected principal of the WaKeeney Grade and Junior High School, where he stayed until his retirement in 1990.

Fred was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney and a lifetime member of both the Knights of Columbus and WaKeeney VFW Post. He was a former member of the Kansas and National Associations of Elementary School Principals and the Phi Delta Kappa honorary fraternity. During his lifetime, he had several volunteer positions including high school CCD teacher, lector for his parishes, and community service in conjunction with the Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie A. Lang; his children Dr. Stanley Lang and wife, Sheri; Dr. Gordon Lang and wife, Jane; Patricia Langley and husband, Rick; sisters Stella Augustine and Rosemarie Augustine and husband, William; grandchildren Noel DeGray and husband, Doug; Elizabeth West and husband, Justin; Greg Lang; Dr. Jamie Lang and husband, Dr. Cole Ritchie; Alexander Langley; Maria Lang; Kathrine Lang; and Christopher Lang; and great-grandchildren Felicity West; Kepha West and Samuel West.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Ann Connors, in 1989.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Christ the King Catholic Church of WaKeeney. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Trego Recreation Commission or Godfrey Lang Memorial Fund (to establish a scholarship), and may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N. 12th, WaKeeney.
