Franklin Howard was born on December 14, 1917, to Ira Walter and Berta Helen Abell Clark in Clarinda, Iowa. He died at the age of 83 Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at Clarinda Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He attended school in New Market, Iowa. He moved with his family to Missouri for a short time before returning to Iowa to marry Elsie Ruth Sleep. The wedding took place Thursday, October 5, 1939 at a Henry Filed’s broadcast and celebration in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple made their home near Elsie’s parents’ farm in southern Taylor County near Siam, Iowa. Following the death of Elsie’s father, Frank Sleep, in 1954, the couple took over the operation of both farms. Frank supplemented the family’s income by a variety of agricultural and auto repair related jobs. The couple retired from farming in 1982, settling in New Market, Iowa. In 1985 they moved again to Clarinda and lived the last several years at Foster Manor.
Frank and Elsie led a very social life. They had a very large circle of family and friends with whom they went to dances, played cards, and entertained. During the summer months many younger relatives would stay at the farm and in 1967 Frank and Elsie became the parents of an adopted son, James Franklin Clark.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law James F. and Annette Clark of Corning; grandchildren Chris and Sarah Clark, also of Corning; s brother, Don Clark and his wife Minnie of California; and sister Violet Bayles of Washington.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother Seth Clark and sister Nita Douthit, and an infant grandson, David James Clark.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 30, at Eichemeyer Funeral Chapel with burial at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa. Eichemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
