This former town was founded officially in 1793 and was one of the oldest European communities established in present day. At age 16 he was a waiter in a saw mill. He did odd jobs and a little farming and went to Florida for the winters. He and Viola were divorced and separated for years before he died outside of the house fire where he lived by "Gales Pond", Elbridge Township, Oceana County, MI.
