He enlisted in Co. H, 24th U.S. Colored Infantry on 13 Mar 1865 in Philadelphia, PA. After the war ended, he reenlisted as a Buffalo Soldier in Co. I, 38th U.S. Infantry and Co. I, 24th U.S. Infantry according to his pension record. He married Mary Elizabeth Stone in 1876 in Starr County, TX.
