A Time to be Born…Mrs. Sarah Jane Collier was born July 7, 1925 to the late Mr. Tommy Hawkins and the late Mrs. Irma Hayes Hawkins in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
…A Time to Live… Sarah Jane was educated at the Berkley Jr. High School. She later completed a course and received a Practical Nurse Certificate. She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Rousseau C. Collier on May 31, 1942. To this union 3 children were born. She and Rousseau built a life on their Faith in the Lord. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1976.
…A Time to Serve… At the age of 9, Sarah Jane recognized the need for a Savior in her life. She confessed hope in Christ and joined Liberty P.B. Church where she faithfully served.
She embraced with great love and joined the Acklin C.M.E. Church in the 1960's. She served in many capacities throughout the years including:
- Sunday School Teacher - Usher - Senior Choir President - Stewardess
- Organizer of Children's Choir (The "Sunbeams") - Director of Christian Education
- Commission on Membership & Evangelism Member
- Recognized at the 2012 North Central Alabama Regional Conference for her many years of dedicated service to the C.M.E. Church
Mrs. Collier was a member of Murkey Cloud Chapter #86 Order of Eastern Star for many years.
Mrs. Collier was employed as Site Manager of the Berkley Senior Center for over 20 years. She retired in 1999. The Madison County Commission dedicated and named a recreation room in her honor at the Berkley Senior Center.
There was a special love in her heart for cooking, singing, gardening, canning and giving to her family, friends, the church and community.
…A Time to Die…God embraced Sarah in His arms and received her with love on Monday afternoon, July 1, 2013 at her home in the Berkley Community. Sarah passed through the door where our Father claims His own.
…A Time to Remember…We thank God for the guidance, discipline, wisdom, love and joy we received during the time He allowed us to be blessed with such a wonderful mother.
Her memories will forever be cherished by her children; one son, Mr. R. Calvin (Wanda) Collier, Jr., Gurley, Alabama: two daughters, Mrs. Sherrie (Charley) Cross, Huntsville, Alabama and Ms. Eunice Bridgett Collier, Gurley: seven grandchildren, Mrs. Donna C. Williams, Mrs. Dawn (Thornton, Jr.) Stanley, Charley (Cassandra) Cross, Jr., Ms. Marsha N. Collier, Ms. Shirethra Timmons, Mr. Mark Collier and Mr. Michael Collier: fourteen great grandchildren: one great-great grandchild: three sisters, Mrs. Lorene McCombs, Huntsville, Mrs. Zelma Collier, Huntsville and Mrs. Eliza Bradford, Louisville, Kentucky: one god-daughter, Mrs. Courtney Graham (B.J.) Thompson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
Funeral service for Mrs. Sarah Collier will be Monday, July 8, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Acklin Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with Reverend Jeremy Williams officiating. Mrs. Collier will lie in repose one hour prior to the funeral service. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Nelms Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery.
