Juanita Wills Shelton, 84, of Brawley passed away Sunday, November 8.
Mrs. Shelton was born November 16, 1924 in Merkel, Texas. She attended schools in Texas coming to California with her family in 1938. She graduated from Brawley Union High School on June 1, 1945. She married Ira M. "Dick" Shelton on June 2, 1945 in Yuma, Arizona. Mr. Shelton had just returned from Iwo Jima. After completing military service in Vallejo, CA. The Sheltons returned to Brawley in 1947. Mrs. Shelton was a homemaker but also worked in the Brawley Union High School snack bar for nineteen years.
As a young girl Mrs. Shelton accepted the Lord as her savior at the Anson Ave. Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas. In April 1951 Mr. and Mrs. Shelton joined the Western Ave. Baptist Church in Brawley. At the time of her death, she was the longest serving member of Western Ave. Baptist Church.
Visitation will take place Thursday, November 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Frye Chapel in Brawley.
Funeral Service will commence at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 20 at Western Avenue Baptist Chruch in Brawley with Pastor Ted Koroluk officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ira M. Shelton; parents, Clyde and Louise Wills; brothers, Jack, Bob, and Tommy Wills.
Juanita is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Carolyn Shelton of Brawley; daughters and sons-in-law, Karin and Dick Ashurst of Westmorland, and Judy and Gary Witt of Roswell, New Mexico; special daughter, Nancy Shelton of Union Grove, WI; grandchildren, David Shelton of Wilcox, AZ, Mark Shelton, of Imperial, Aimee Shelton of Irvine, Bryan Ashurst of Brawley, Valerie Dichiara of Sacramento, Kara Janin of La Quinta, Shannon Sassie of Lewisville, Texas, Kyle Witt of Trenton, MI, Kalin Witt of Clinton Township, MI, and Kevin Witt of Brownstown, MI; sisters, Patsy Young of Joshua Tree, CA and Shirley Standefer of Spavinaw, OK; 23 great-grandchildren.
