He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps in World War II serving 1943-1946. He was a radar bombardier on a B29, stationed on the island of Guam, with a rank of 1st Lieutenant.
After the war, he returned to Jacksboro and worked 33 years for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier.
He served as a member of the J.I.S.D. Board of Trustees from 1966-1969 Vernon was a member of the Jacksboro City Council from 1985-1989 and served as Mayor of Jacksboro from 1989-1991.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 69 years, Beverly Elizabeth Tucker, three sons David Bentley and wife Dianne of the Woodlands, Texas, Robert Alan of Post Oak, Texas, John Richard and wife Dessa of Carrollton Texas three granddaughters Susan Miller, Julie Black, and Emily Levine, and two grandsons Paul and Philip Black
