John and Sarah arrived in South Australia aboard Trafalga on 17 January 1849, in the company of John’s brother Thomas and his family. They originally lived at Gawler River, where their last child was born in 1850 and later died in 1853. John then bought land on the North Para River, 3 miles north of Angaston, and called the property “Rose Hill Farm”. This was later taken over by his son John. He is shown in various directories and almanacs (1851 – 1867) as a farmer of Gawler River and Lights Pass. John died suddenly at Rose Hill Farm, “the residence of his son John”, on 14 September 1869 aged 71, and is buried in the old cemetery at Angaston. Cause of death was given as “disease of the head”.
