Aaron L. Richardson, Siskiyou County native, died September 7, 2013 at his home in Mt. Shasta after a long illness. Mr. Richardson was born April 28, 1927 in Mt. Shasta to George and Bernice Richardson; the second of four children.
His infant daughter Terry Lea and two brothers Kenneth and Gary predeceased him. The youngest sibling; sister June Davis lives in Arizona.
Aaron graduated from Mt. Shasta High School and joined the Navy toward the end of WWII. He married Ione Holecek "Onie" June 23, 1946. They had known each other since third grade, and were married sixty-seven years at the time of his death. During high school Aaron worked for Purity Grocery Store. After his naval discharge he worked construction and then for Mr. Earl Barnum clearing power line right of way. He bought his first piece of construction equipment in 1954 from Mr. Barnum, a D6 tractor, which was the start of his lifelong business Aaron L. Richardson Excavation and Grading, which continues today as Aaron L. Richardson & Son LLC; owned and operated by his son Aaron Brian Richardson. The business focused on road building for the lumber industry in Siskiyou and Shasta County. Over the years the business grew to include site preparation and many other projects that involved excavation, grading and snow removal, with equipment yards in Mt. Shasta and Dunsmuir, California. When the state required a contractor's license more than forty years after Aaron began his business, he studied and past the exam in 1995.
Aaron's work projects included setting the ski lift towers and land preparation at the old Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl, building the ski runs and the water storage pond at the current Mt. Shasta Ski Park and the building of ponds, bridges and culverts throughout the county.
His philanthropic work included grading the baseball and soccer fields in Mt. Shasta. Aaron was a founding member of the local Elks and the Mt. Shasta Snowmen Ski Club.
Aaron enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He loved to read, especially about wildlife and flying airplanes. He could speak with knowledge about the history of flight. Both of Aaron's grandfathers fought in the Civil War. His father was a soldier in WWI, his brothers: Ken a marine in WWII and brother Gary, a sailor, during the Korean Conflict; therefore, Aaron was a wealth of knowledge on these subjects.
