Marvin G. Davis, 81, Alexandria, passed away on September 9, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 17, 1932, in Alexandria, the son of Elijah Davis and Mary (King) Davis, and was a lifetime resident of Alexandria.

Marvin graduated from Alexandria High School. He served with the United States Navy during the Korean War. He retired from Continental Can, formerly of Elwood, after 40 years.

He and Janet Sue Kerr were married in 1962 and celebrated their 50 year anniversary last year. They had one son, James Davis, who retired as Commander in the US Navy and was Marvin's pride and joy.

Marvin had been a former member and past president of the Alexandria Kiwanis Club. He was also a former member of the Alexandria Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star and the Alexandria Elks. Marvin attended the Christian Congregation Church of Alexandria.

Marvin and Sue had a winter home in Melbourn Beach, Florida where Marvin enjoyed the beach, fishing, spending time with friends and other activities for many years. Marvin and Sue spent much time with Virginia and Charles Kerr, who were his in-laws, best friends and mentors.

Marvin was one of eight children raised with loving care by his mother, Mary Irene King. Preceding him in death are his father and mother, his seven siblings, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, and two sisters-in-law.

Surviving to cherish his memory are wife, Janet Sue (Kerr) Davis; son, James P. (Anita) Davis of West Chester; grandson, James P. Davis Jr.; sister-in-law, Debbie (Bob) Downey of Alexandria; several nieces and nephews including special nephews, Joe Miller and Jonathan Downey and special niece, Kayla Downey; and special four-legged friends, Libby and Izzy who never left his side; and his wonderful Hospice family, Candy and Chris.

Services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison Street, Alexandria, with Pastor Jerry Young officiating. Interment will follow in Park View Cemtery with military honors by the United States Navy and the Elwood Veterans of Foreign Wars-American Legion Honors Team.
