The youngest of five children (four sons and a daughter) born to Albert Alonzo Fuller and Edith Mary Jackson, Gilbert grew up in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. He moved to California around 1924 and married Erma Florence Clark in Fresno, at the home of her parents, on November 25, 1928. They settled in Downey, California in 1938 and had one child, a son Richard, born in 1937.
