Kenneth Robert McCollum, 71, of Spencer, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013, at IU Health- Bloomington Hospital. He was born in Portsmouth, Massachusetts, on February 5, 1942. His parents were Howard Robert and Mabel Ivy (Swanson) McCollum. Ken was a 1961 Freedom High School graduate. He then joined the Navy and served two years. Ken received his BS in 1976 and MSED in 1981 from Indiana University and an Education Administrative degree in 1991 from Indiana State University. Mr. McCollum retired after 30 years with Spencer-Owen Community Schools. He was a board member of the Freedom Community Center; Past President of Indiana State Transportation Association; a member of the State of Indiana Softball Hall of Fame, Bloomington Softball Hall of Fame and Senior Softball Association. Ken was also a member of the Freedom United Methodist Church where he had served as chairman of the Administrative Board. He was an avid IU fan.

Ken is survived by his wife, whom he married 50 years ago on May 17, 1963, Betty Jane (Vest) McCollum; son, Mark (Kaylee) McCollum of Brazil; daughters, Kimberley (Tom) Frazier of Spencer and Lisa (Shane) Bassett of Jeffersonville; sister, Mary Ellen (Joe) Dimino of Massachusetts; grandchildren, Matt, Aaron, Robby, Zachary, Brenden, Devin, Nicholas, Peyton and Alexis; step-grandchild, Samantha; and great-grandson, Zayne.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Barbara Welch.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 12, 2013 at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer. Pastor Terry Marker will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery where Military graveside services will be conducted by the Spencer American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, and from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Freedom United Methodist Church or Freedom High School Scholarship Fund through the Owen County Community Foundation.
