Eliza Marie Conrad was born on 17 April 1904, in Missouri Township (probably near Rockford), Chariton County, Missouri, to Minnie Burton Prewitt (1882 – 1958) and Richard "Dick" Conrad (1871 – 1963). Marie, as she was known, enjoyed the life of a country girl. She grew up with brothers: two brothers died early, Wallace (1907 – 1915) and Fritz (1911 – 1911), and the last child, Estill Eugene (1920 – 1989), came much later.

An added piece of her upbringing: her family took in a relative, James Arthur Prewitt (1910-1980) since the mother had the child out of wedlock and was disallowed raising the child due to her marriage with another man (who was not the father). Marie always considered James Arthur (how they called "Jap") as her brother.

On 10 March 1923 in Keytesville, Pete married Eliza Marie Conrad (1904 – 1993). Pete and Marie did not know that they were second cousins. They had three children: Melvin Sylvester Conrad (1923 – 1941), Vernon Arthur "Shortie" Conrad (1924 – 2012) and Evelyn (1926 - 2023). The children were born about 3 miles southeast of Brunswick. There, Pete farmed the Frank Meyer's farm and Mrs. Meyers taught Marie how to cook.

About 1928, the Conrad Family moved from Chariton County to Saline County, across the Missouri River, to the Miami River bottoms and farmed several sections of land living first on the Jerome Stephens farm, then the Henry Akeman Farm and then the Roy Franklin farm. The house had no running water or electricity until it was lighted by in law Bert Bailey sometime after WWII. Tragically, the family's oldest child Melvin died in an automobile mishap in 1941.

In the late 1940s/early 1950s, Pete and Marie moved from the Miami Bottoms to south of Gilliam, Missouri where they purchased the old Bailey Farm and Homestead. Then in the early 1960s, they moved to the P.P. Price farm near Slater, Missouri. Pete died of a massive heart attack on the Price Farm, late in the afternoon on Sunday, 22 Nov 1964.

Marie moved from the Price Farm to a new home in Marshall, Saline County, Missouri. She married Strother Clayton Parkhurst (1897 – 1985) on 16 April 1966 in Marshall. They moved to Clayton's farm just north of Sweet Springs, Missouri. As Clayton's health declined, they moved into the Big Bend Retreat Center in Slater, Saline County, Missouri. After Clayton's death there, Marie remained until her death on 13 August 1993. She was a wonderful mother and a loving grandmother. She is missed by many.
