Florence Mae Franklin Manahan Cauldle passed away on December 31, 2006 in a Belton, Texas skilled nursing residence. She was born October 20, 1925 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, the daughter of Hugh B. Manahan (03 Jan 1900 - 18 Nov 1959) and Minnie Mae Wier Manahan (01 Jul 1894 - 12 Dec 1984).

Florence was a registered nurse. She graduated with an RN from the Lilly Jolley School of Nursing in Houston in 1946. She also graduated from the University of Houston with a BS in Nursing. Continuing her training, she earned a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Southwestern Texas State College in San Marcos, Texas.

In 1961, she moved to the Rio Grande Valley where she began a career in teaching nursing at Pan American University in Edinburg. Later, she moved to Waco to teach at McLennan County Junior College. After five years, Florence was invited to begin a Vocational Nursing Program in Mexia in connection with Navarro College. It was in this capacity that she found great satisfaction in teaching students to be competent, caring nurses in the BIStone Counties. Many of the hospitals and nursing homes in this area are staffed by her former students who frequently greet her with a hug and a thank-you for the instructions she taught and modeled for them.

Due to failing health, Florence moved to the Stilwell Retirement Residence in Waco where she participated in various activities and made many friends. After she broke her hip in a fall early in 2006, she transferred to a skilled nursing unit in Belton, Texas to be near her sister.

Florence married first Jack Gordon Franklin (31 Jan 1924 - 12 Jul 2005). They had three children. Florence married Kenneth Ray Caude, December 19, 1981 in Mexia Texas.

She is survived by Kenneth and her three children, Joyce Elaine "Joey" Duncan, Timothy Deon Franklin, and wife Jan, and Patrice Annette Franklin. She is also survived by a sister, Hugh Delle Manahan Broadway and husband W. D. and a brother Harold Bernard "Bud" Manahan and wife, Martha. She has two granddaughers; Candace Snyder and husband Rob and Kristen Emig. Also, survived by five great grandchildren who were the delight of her life; Hanna, Rayton, Morgan, Zoem and Elijah.

Florence was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Mexia. With a heart full of love for missions, she had served as president of WMU and taught an adult women's Bible class. She loved to read, to study the Bible, to write stories, and to share her knowledge with others.

Florence's life was filled with tender care for the ill and the less fortunate. In Houston, Texas, early in her career, she was a public health nurse and in the latter part of her career, she managed the Caritas Store in Mexia. In between these assignments, Florence nursed, often as head nurse, in hospitals from Houston to the Rio Grande Valley to Waco and to Mexia.

This loving, caring, serving person who devoted her life to helping others will be greatly missed. Her ready smile, her wit, her pencil behind the ear stir many memories. She has gone to a rich reward and her "works do follow her" (Rev. 14:13)

Memorial services were held at the First Baptist Church, Mexia, at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2006. Private burial services were held earlier.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Florence Franklin Caudle Endowed Scholarship for Nursing Students at McLennan County College, 1400 College Drive, Waco, TX 76708
