Jack D. Speer, 86, of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2013, at the Galichia Heart Hospital of Wichita. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at the St. Paul United Methodist Church of Arkansas City. Burial will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

A memorial has been established with St. Paul United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Jack was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Winfield, to William and Ruth (Waite) Speer. He attended local schools, graduating from Dexter High School in 1944. Jack served in the United States Army Air Corps and later the United States Air Force. He married Mildred Marrs on March 15, 1951, at the Mount Zion Community Church. The couple made their home wherever Jack was stationed for a couple of years, before moving to the farm on Lover's Lane. Jack worked for Moorman Feed Company and the New Era Mill before going in business for himself building houses and commercial property all over the Arkansas City area. He also built many of the rural water pipe lines that surround Arkansas City.

Jack was a faithful member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brad; a great-granddaughter, Makayla Rankin-Moore; and siblings, Edward, Howard, Clifford and Bernie Speer, and Doris Godfrey.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred, of the home; daughter, Susan, and her husband, John Schmitt, of Kingman; son, Barry, and his wife, Freda of, Cedar Vale; daughter-in-law, Patti, and her husband, Donnie Cox, of Portland, Texas; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
