Ben was the son of James and Rose Ambroze of Linton, Allamakee Co, Iowa.

In 1910, Rose Ambrose was in a mental home in Iowa.

Ben volunteered in WWI. Ambrose was assigned to the famed Rainbow Division, which served on the front lines in France. In later years, he never talked about his overseas experiences except to tell about an Ojibway army buddy from Grand Portage.

In Rosebush Twp, Cook Co, MN 1930 census, Ben was a guide at a "summer resort."

In the 6/24/1940 Cook Co, MN census -
Benjamin Ambrose 40 b Iowa guide/resort - 1935 in same house Marian Ambrose 32 b Ohio - 1935 in Evanston, IL

Ben and Marian Valvia "Val" McIlhenny were married in January 1937. They divorced in 1951, years after Val and the girls had moved out.

Ben and Val had two daughters: Bonnie A Wasmund b 1940 and Holly b 1946.

Val moved to Virginia, MN so the girls could spend summers with their father. She married Stanley Lenont in 1955.

Benny was a legend in the Boundary Waters area. He had flower and vegetable gardens, which he supplemented with soil and manure brought back from Iowa. Benny was a prospector who sought gold for more than 60 years in this area. He was friends with Dorothy Molter, Justine Kerfoot, Virginia "Dinna" Marilyn Clayton Madsen (1922-2010), etc.

In 1974, he was given lifetime tenancy by the US government so he could stay on his island in Ottertrack Lake for his lifetime.

His ashes were scattered by his daughters, Bonnie and Holly, on the calm waters next to his homestead.

There is a memorial plaque honoring Ben Ambrose mounted on a cliff across from Ben's homestead on Ottertrack Lake. The plaque had been crafted by Ben's friend, John Bouchard, a well respected, long-time conservation officer that had served on Saganaga Lake.

The US Park Service burned down Benny's cabins, outhouse, outbuildings and stacked the rocks in a cairn as a tribute to the legend of the Boundary Waters. Long-time BWCA resident Dorothy Molter's cabin was moved to Ely, MN. It is a museum today.
