Callie Franklin King, 92, passed away July 21, 2013, at White Oak of Waxhaw. He was lovingly called "Kekkey" by his family and many others. Callie was born August 10, 1920 in Wadesboro, NC and was the son of the late Ernest King and Minnie Lee Hudson of Anson County. The family would like to thank the staff, nurses and all of Kekkey's " #1 buddies" at White Oak in Waxhaw. He received excellent care and loved participating in all of their social activities. His favorites were the music, sing-along's and ice cream socials. He loved to sing with and for anyone who would listen and won first place in their talent show a few weeks before his passing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Mary Margaret Goodwin King. They married April 12, 1941 in Chester, SC and lived in Mineral Springs, NC for 63 years. Callie was also preceded in death by his brothers Clay King and Fred King of Lancaster, SC: and sister Mae King Harris of Cramerton, NC. Callie is survived by his children, Teresa King Dover and husband Warren of Charlotte, NC and Wayne Douglas King and wife Kay of Marvin, NC; two granddaughters, Keely Lynn Moser Robison and husband Ed of Waxhaw, NC and Lesley Faith Dover Spivey and husband Andy of Charlotte, NC; step-grandson Matthew Seth Poole and wife Melissa of Tucson, AZ; two great-grandchildren, Mallory Margaret Johnson and Chandler Thomas Johnson of Waxhaw, NC; six step-great-grandchildren, Matthew, Alyssa, Nicholas, Mary, Olivia and Gavin. He retired in 1979 after 37 years of service with The Defense Department, U.S. Government, Charlotte, NC. Callie was an avid supporter of the drama "Listen and Remember" in Waxhaw and served on the Board of Directors of the Waxhaw Drama Assoc. He worked in Publicity and Promotions and for 30 plus years played the part of Lord Rawdon. He also performed in many plays for the Union County Players, the Monroe Little Theatre and the Lancaster Dinner Theatre; in TV commercials and movies. Callie had a never ending passion for his Masonic and Shrine memberships. He was a Past Master of Waxhaw Masonic Lodge and received his Diamond Jubilee Award for over 63 years of service. He was a 62 year Life Member of Oasis Shrine in Charlotte and a member of the Scottish Rite receiving KCCH, the York Rite, a charter member of the Union County Shrine Club and a member of the Oasis Past Master's club. He was a United States Navy veteran during World War II stationed in Norfolk, VA. Callie was an active member of Mineral Springs United Methodist Church where he served in many offices. He served on the School Boards of both Mineral Springs School and Parkwood High School in Union County. Callie was an avid supporter of the community and Union County. He was active in many civic groups and gained the respect of his community and throughout the entire county. In 1984 Callie was one of a group of Union County citizens and business people to help create a local bank to return some of the control of local wealth to Union County. He served on the original Board of Directors of the Bank of Union. The bank was acquired by First Charter Bank and later by Fifth Third Bank. He received many honors and awards, but said that his greatest accomplishment was his children Teresa and Wayne. Callie's proudest moment was in 2010 when his son Wayne served as Potentate of the Oasis Shrine in Charlotte.
