Our beloved father, Preston Denton Amend, Jr., 92 years, 1 Month, 2 days old, went to live eternally with his Savior in Heaven and joined the Heavenly Choir on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at 1:11 p.m. His family is rejoicing that P.D. can now hear, sing and run! Mr. Amend was the first choir director of Castle Hills First Baptist Church from 1956 - 1975 and retired as Pressman from the San Antonio Light and Express-News. Our father moved his family from Oklahoma to San Antonio, Texas in 1949 to join the newspaper team and become Minister of Music at Manor Baptist and later joined the staff as Minister of Music at Castle Hills First Baptist Church in San Antonio.
Our father was proud to serve his country during WWII teaching aircraft maintenance at the Navy school in Chicago, Illinois before being "shipped out" for service during the war in Saipan. He always told his family he was proud to serve as a young man for three years, nine months and twelve days. As the war planes arrived, his team managed to "get them back in the air" in record time.
Our father was born August 5, 1921 in Shawnee, Oklahoma and the only son to Preston Denton, Sr. and Ola Mae Amend. Our father loved his three sisters, Vera, Mary, and Bernice and worked to supply insulin which was needed for their disease.
Dad married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Arlene Solomon Amend (deceased) on December 17, 1942 sharing 70 years together serving the Lord with their music talent. They were blessed with four children, Sylvia Amend Batha (Erwin), Sharon Amend Moczygemba (Matt), Preston Denton Amend, III, and Paul David Amend (Janet); ten grandchildren and their spouses, step-grandchildren and their families, many nieces and nephews, and adored great grandchildren. "The greatest gifts from my Lord" he always declared! Family, celebrations, singing and music were held so dear to our father.
The family would like to say "Thank You" to our family friend, Mason Williams, for his loving care towards our father during his month stay at Cibolo Creek Nursing Home. Also, the caring devotion by All County Home and Hospice Care, 32826 IH10 West - Allison Smoot, Mary Cortez, Liza Taylor, Dr. Akin and their entire amazing staff!
Memorial donations may be sent to St. John Lutheran Church CHOIR FUND -c/o T. J. Bazoon, 315 E. Rosewood, Boerne, Texas 78006.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Vaughan's Funeral Home of Boerne. The Funeral Service will be held afterwards at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow in the Boerne Cemetery with Military Honors.
