Joseph Vernon Bryson, 82, of Columbia died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2003, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 W. Business Loop 70, with Pastor Brian Evans officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the funeral home.
Mr. Bryson was born May 15, 1920, in Franklin, N. C., to Joseph Andrew and Doris Lorinda Dean Bryson.
He married Kathryn A. Butler on June 13, 1953, in Springfield, and she survives.
He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a Columbia firefighter for 31 years and retired as a battalion chief. He was a member of American Legion Post 202. He served as president and vice president of the Columbia Safety Council. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include a son, Dan Bryson of Columbia; two daughters, Cindy Lanter of Overland Park, Kan., and Lori Jones of Harrisburg; a brother, Dan Bryson of Edmond, Okla.; two sisters, Doris Anderson of Webster Groves and Mary Margaret Dudley of Independence; and five grandchildren.
Two brothers, Jim and Will Bryson, preceded him in death.
