SUMMERTON Allen Eugene "Gene" Austin, 70, husband of Terry Ann Thomas Shores Austin, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, after a two-year battle with cancer.

Born on Dec. 5, 1938, in Sumter, he was a son of Helen Priest Austin and the late Phillip "Pete" Austin.

Mr. Austin was an active member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Manning. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1976 after 23 years of service. A remembered highlight of his military career was personally witnessing the recovery of the Apollo Space Capsule. Following his military career he was employed at G&G Metal Fabrication Inc., where he retired in 1998.

In addition to his mother of Sumter, Gene is survived by his wife, Terry Ann of Summerton; a sister, Frances Gainey and husband Harvey of Sumter; a brother, Phillip "Donald" Austin (Lucille) of Sumter; two daughters: Elizabeth Hickey (Mike) of Armona, Calif., and Samantha Mizer (Howard) of Cassatt; two sons: Allen Austin II (Donna) of Rocky Point, N.C., and Timothy Austin (Cynthia) of Round Rock, Texas; Gene also had three stepsons: Eric Ehrlicher (Dana) of Fruitland, Idaho, Steven Daugherty (Vangie) of Clarkton, N.C., Richard Daugherty (Betsy) of Irmo; one stepdaughter, Angie Buza (Al) of Santee; and 25 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Austin was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Austin, and his sister Nancy Gentil, both of Sumter.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 2529 Raccoon Road in Manning, with Father Dave Whitman officiating.

Burial followed Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter, with Full Military Honors.

The family received friends Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1176 Pinewood Road in Sumter.

Memorials may be made to the Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church Youth Program.
