Obituary
Clarnece J. Barnes was born April 6, 1899, at Evanston, Wyoming, the son of Brigham and Mary Ann Barnes. He was the eighth child of eleven brothers and one sister.

Clarence grew up in this valley, where he got his elementary education. He went to work with his father in the construction work using teams and wagons.

He was married to Olive Grace Johnston March 1, 1918. They were blessed with one son Clarence Barnes, Jr.

In 1920 he went to work for the highway department for four years. After this he went into ranching at Randolph, Utah. After two and one half years Clarence returned to work for the highway department at Evanston, Wyo., in 1936 and 1940 was transferred to Rock Springs, and returned to Jackson in 1944.

In the many years of service Clarence saw many changes in the construction of our highways, the winter storms, the snow and mud slides. Keeping the road open leading into Jackson Hole was a great challenge to Clarence, which he loved to meet and did with a great lot of ability and good judgement.

He was preceded in death by his wife Grace Sept. 1, 1963. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Elks lodge and the Odd Fellows lodge, and the Highway Employees Assn.

He retired from the highway department in April of 1964, after 44 years of faithful service to the department.

He was married to Laverna Stilson July 23, 1964. The past five years they have enjoyed retired life, living in Mesa, Ariz., in the winter and Jackson in the summer.

He is survived by his widow, Laverna of Jackson, his son and daughter-in-law, J. and Shirley of Evanston, Wyo., four grandchildren of Evanston and Rexburg, Idaho.

Seven brothers, Richard of Mesa, Ariz., Tom and George of Evanston, Charles of Salt Lake City, Utah, Robert, Frank and Ernest of Ogden, Utah. One sister LaVerna Edger of Salt Lake City, Utah. Two stepsons of Jackson, two stepdaughters of Jackson and Dubois, numerous nieces and nephews and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his mother, father, four brothers, Wm. H., Joe, Brigham, Harold and a step-son, Glen Stilson.
