William R. “Bill” Pflasterer, 84, of Crete, passed away on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 at Bryan LGH West in Lincoln from complications of Lewey Body Disease.
He was born in Crete to Ralph and Mildred (Behrman) Pflasterer on Dec. 4, 1927.
He attended Crete Public Schools, graduating in 1945. He attended Doane College for one year. He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Key West, Fla., with a blimp squadron. Following his discharge in 1948 he returned to Doane and graduated in 1952. While at Doane he played football and was a member of the Alpha Omega Fraternity.
He started his teaching and coaching career at Waverly High School. He coached football and basketball for two years and then at Lewisville High School for one year. He went to Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa where he was assistant football coach and head coach of the cross-country indoor and outdoor track and swimming teams for 17 years. He was inducted into the Cornell College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972 and was the Alumni Director for over two years. He established Pflasterer Painting, retiring in 1996.
Bill was a member of the Crete VFW and a Life Member of the Crete Noon Sertoma, serving as presiden 1990-91 and received the Sertoman of the Year in 1984. He enjoyed golf, hunting, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, and by sister Shirley Rold.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma; sons and daughters-in-law: Ralph and Beth, Lincoln; John, Schuyler; Dan and Rita, Schuyler, and Jim and Vicki, Grand Island; brother and sister-in-law Paul and Donna, Springfield, Mo.; special niece and nephew Julie and Ron Tompkins, Crete; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry and Beve Ollila, Wrightstown, Wis.; and mother of his children, Marlene Moore, Schuyler.
A Celebration of Live was held on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Kuncl Funeral Home, Crete. Memorials to Doane College—Fuhrer Fieldhouse Renovation.
