Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Manager. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, he spent 15 seasons in the minor leagues, never making it to the major leagues as a player. In 1926, he made it to the major leagues when appointed manager of the National League's Chicago Cubs. Over a 24-year major league career, he managed the Chicago Cubs 1926 to 1930, New York Yankees 1931 to 1946 and Boston Red Sox 1948 to 1950. He achieved nine pennants one with the Chicago Cubs and eight with the Yankees, including four World Championships 1936 to 1939. His teams also placed second seven times and never finished out of the first division. He compiled a .614 winning percentage, with 2126 wins and 1335 lost. In 1957, he was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
