Obituary

Mack Saunders' life will be celebrated during a memorial service at Waud's Funeral Home Saturday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m.

Mack was born in Foss Junction, Okla., Oct. 22, 1915, to Frank and Sinnie (Chandler) Saunders, and died in Salem Feb. 4, 2006, at age 90. He moved as a child to Sand Point, Idaho. His master's in education was earned at the University of Idaho, and he taught high school math in Gooding, Idaho, before enlisting in the Army June 1, 1943. He served as an artillery officer in Italy until the end of World War II, and again in Korea for 18 months.

Beatrice Doyle, a school classmate, and Mack were married in Spokane, Wash., in 1938. Bea predeceased Mack in 1979.

After serving in the Armed Forces, he returned to Spokane and taught high school mathematics at North Central High School and Ferris High School, later becoming head of the Math Department. Mack also coached the tennis team. He retired in 1979.

On Jan. 22, 1980, he and Dora Johnson were united in marriage. They lived in Old Town, Idaho, until 1988, when they relocated to Netarts. Mack and Dora enjoyed traveling and took cruises to the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, and to Hawaii, and also motored to Alaska. In 2003, they moved to Five Rivers Retirement Center.

Mack was a master carpenter and enjoyed many happy hours building beautiful furniture. He was a hardworking man during his younger years, but took up many hobbies when he retired. He loved gardening, hunting and crabbing. After moving to Tillamook he enjoyed the warmer weather and became a proficient golfer. Mack was also a lifelong avid fisherman and loved being on the rivers or out in the bay.

He was a member of the Tillamook Anglers Association and for many years was a volunteer at the Whiskey Creek Fish Hatchery.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Gene and Bly; and three sisters, Vera, Laura and Beryel.

He is survived by his wife, Dora Johnson-Saunders of Tillamook; daughter, Susan Dahlquist and partner Barry Holmes of Spokane, Wash.; stepdaughter, Dr. Virginia Johnson and partner Dr. Joyce Murphy of Port Hadlock, Wash., stepdaughter, Linda Stephenson and husband Mike of Tillamook; a brother, Oliver Saunders of Riverside, Wash.; and by grandchildren, Bradley and Brian Dahlquist of Seattle, Wash., Melissa Dahlquist of Minneapolis, Minn., Erin Stephenson of Tigard and Patrick Stephenson of Monmouth.
