OBITUARY - Artie Mae Douglass - Cordele Dispatch - (Apr/5/2008)

Services for Artie Mae Douglass, 90, of Thomasville are at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 6, 2008, in the chapel of the Dees-Parrish Family Funeral Home in Lake City, Fla. The Rev. Lewis Daniels will officiate and interment is in Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Ellisville. Mrs. Douglass died Thursday, April 3 in Camellia Gardens Life Center in Thomasville. A native and 86-year resident of Lake City, Mrs. Douglass moved to Thomasville, four years ago. The daughter of the late Aaron and Mary Frances Curry Witt, Mrs. Douglass attended Crossroads School through the eighth grade and was a member of the 1937 graduating class of Fort White High School. She worked as the dietician for the Forest Ranger School from 1955-1972 and then for Columbia High School from 1972 until she retired in 1986. Mrs. Douglass was a member of the Columbia Senior Services, the Homemakers Club and the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 113. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake City where she had been active with the Sarah Circle until moving to T homasville. She was a current member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomasville. In 1988, Mrs. Douglass wrote and published her own cookbook, Cooking with Artie Mae, which is currently in its sixth publication. In her spare time, Mrs. Douglass enjoyed cooking and doing needlework. She will always be remembered as a people person and she loved spending time with her family. Mrs. Douglass was preceded in death by her husband, Erman Otway Douglass. Survivors include her son, Erman Gary Douglass (Maxine) of Thomasville; two daughters, Gayle F. Mason (Glenn) of Spartanburg, S.C., Rebecca Thomas (Reuben) of Lake City, Fla.; a sister, Alice Darby of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Douglass, Jennifer Douglass Jackson both of Thomasville, Doug Smith of Atlanta, Candace Hiers of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Sydney Jackson. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery Association, 834 S.E.
