Daniel Isgrigg was born on 2 March 1775 in Baltimore County, Maryland, to Michael Nicholson Isgrigg and Barbara Catherine Lore. The family emigrated from the Allegheny Mountains of Maryland to Kentucky in 1789. By the age of eight, Daniel had only about six months of formal schooling. Daniel married Rachel Barnes, a widow with two children, on 22 Jul 1795 in Harrison County, Kentucky. Their sons were Stephen, Daniel, Enoch, Elijah, and Thomas Isgrigg. In 1806, the family removed to Hamilton County, Ohio. Daniel was drafted in the War of 1812 for a term of six months. Being lame, his son Daniel, not yet eighteen, served for him. In 1817, he moved his family to Ripley County, Indiana. Daniel was the author of three books: Hieroglyphic (1834), The Hoosier (1836), and Biography (1838). Daniel Isgrigg died, 17 July 1854, aged 79, and was buried at Schockley Cemetery in Milan, Indiana.
