Son of Robert and Mary (Brown) Mitchell.
-------------------------------------

Plains.
The day before I arrived at Plains, John Mitchell, our old friend subscriber, died, generally loved and respected. He had worked his way from a humble miner to be an influential capitalist. The Catholic church, a commodious and neat edifice, had been finished and dedicated since my former visit; and the M. E. church, which is being erected by Wilson J. Smith, on the hill-top is progressing fairly and will be quite ornamental. Mrs. H. M. Stark is building a new house for her oldest son, near her pleasant residence. Mr. Smith also has charge of this building. Edward Snider has greatly enlarged and improved his store and dwelling. The difficulties I experienced in getting dinner at Plains, if related, might be funny, but not creditable. Yes, there should be a boarding house, restaurant, or hotel where a man might get a meal without making a tramp or an imprudent visitor of himself at a civilians' home.                         L.
