YORKTOWN - The Rev. Dr. George W. Barnes, born Sept. 4, 1933, in Rocky Mount, N.C., was called home to live eternally with our Lord and Savior June 17, 2005. He was called to serve the Lord and entered Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1957. Over several years, he earned master's and doctoral degrees in theology. For 43 years, he pastored seven Virginia churches. Dr. Barnes was devoted to the Lord, his family, friends and church families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ada, and brother, Earl. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Barbara of Yorktown, Va.; four sons, Daniel and Kathleen of Weatherford, Texas, David and Anita of Aydlett, N.C., Dwayne and Elaine of Louisa, Va., and Darell and Michelle of Clarksville, Va.; nine grandchildren, Alicia, Amber, Tamara, Chelsea, David Graham, Devan, Trevor, Emily and George W. II; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Kiah; two sisters, Mary Lou Harvey of Portsmouth, Va., and Martha Shirley of Suffolk, Va.; and a brother, Harold of Chesapeake, Va. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Liberty Baptist Church in Lanexa, Va., with the funeral service to be conducted at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Vincent Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to York County Fire and Rescue.
