Written by Deanna Cooper at Syrena's death

To a very special lady,

For most of my adult life I have been able to call Syrenia DeVowe "Gram" . This has always felt like an honor and privelege to do so. All through my childhood I dearly wished to have the perfect "storybook" type of graandmother. For whatever reasons I was never blessed with such a grandmother relationship inmy life. But then I married Chuck DeVowe. What a blessing to get a wonderful husband and the type of grandmother I had always wanted! Shortly after meeting Syrenia I fell in love with her marvelous family. I couldn't say enough about how wonderful it has been these many years to be part of the DeVowe family.
How does one even begin to speak of all the special attributes that Syrenia possessed? She certainly is one of the most loving people I had ever met. She was always so kind and charitable to ev eryone she knew. I don't remember her ever treating anyone in a hurtful or disrespectful manner. She dearly loved Jesus and was always willing to share that love with everyone. Her faith in Jesus was the foundation of her life. And because of this she was able to raise a large family strong with the belief of God and a sense of family unity. I can't believe that there is anyone here today that married into the DeVowe family that did not have the same experience has I did in that Syrenia brought up her family to be very loving and accepting people. I have always felt very welcomed into the family by all its members. Again I attribute this family characteristic to be one that Syrenia instilled into her children and then it was passed on down to the grandchildren and great- grandchildren and now to the great, great-grandchildren.
I know that an untold number of people have delighted in her love of flowers. She sure always had the most beautiful flowers growing around her home. I'm sure many people going by her home also enjoyed veiwing her beautiful flowers. I remember her out in her garden and yard doing all the things she loved so much to do by her self until she was in her late 80's. Many times her loved ones cringing at the risks she sometimes took by clumbing on things in order to get her yard and gardens to look the way she thought thye should. Syrenia was a very independant woman who loked to manage things on her own as best that she could. I am sure in the last few years she was blessed by her daughters Ellen and Margaretand her grandson Jim helping to maintain the beauty of her beloved flowers for her to enjoy.
I know they also helped her to be outside as much as she was able to.
Syrenia has at times throught the years shared with me how very much she has appreciated all the things her family has helped her with such as her beloved daughter-in-law Doris helping her with her laundry and many shared meals. Her granddaughter Cathy always there to help with whatever was needed. Her grandson Chuck often styling her hair or going shopping with her which they both loved to do. How much she loved having her great-grandson Arv come over to have coffee with her! These are just a few examples of the special things about her family that Syrenia liked liked to talk about. She has other children, "in-law" children, Grandchildren and great grand-children that she has had special times with. Her whole family is filled with people that are very loving and were always willing to help her just as she would come to their aid when needed. Her family exemlifies all that was good in her.
I know that all the people that knew and loved Syrenia have many marvelous stories that they could share with us that would tell just how wonderful she was and why her family loves her so. I would like to share with you a incident that meant a lot to me. As anyone that has ever heard me sing can attest to I cannot carry a tune and sing just awful. For some reason many years ago I started calling family members on their birthdays to sing "Happy Birthday" to them. I don't think I did this totorture the family but really the little kid in me wanted to remind them that they were special and to have a little fun on thier birthday. Well, didn't think this little habit was important to anyone but myself. One year not too long ago I forgot to call Gram and sing "Happy Birthday" to her. The next day I heard from two different family members that Gram thought I was upset with her. When I asked why Gram would ever have reason to think that I could possibly have anything to be upset with her about I was told that because I had not called her on her birthday she was sure I was upset with her. I quickly got on the phone and called Gram to sing to here and to beg her forgiveness for forgetting her birthday the day before. She told me in that conversation that day that she did not feel herbirthday celebration was complete until I had called and sung to her. My oh My! ! Who else but a very special "storybook" type of grandmother would say such a thing about an out of tune rendition of the song 'Happy Birthday". This is just one of many reasons why I love Gram so much.
With her strong love of God and family Syrenia was an inspiration to us all. I feel blessed to have had her for a grandmother. I find comfort in knowing that she is rejoicing now with her Lord and Saviour. Gram will be very missed but not forgotten. And the testimony of her faith and love will go on in those she leaves behind.

Bio

The last years of Grandma's (Gram) life were hard emotionally for her. She
lived to be 93, and lived to see four of her six children die. Her daughter
Naoma was first, but that happened a long time before the others. My dad Don wasthe first to die in later years. He was the youngest, the baby of the family, and it took a lot out of her when he died. Close to the same time her daughters Ellen and Margaret lost their respective husbands John Pearson and
Miles Blanchard. The next son to die was Burt, again this was hard on her, and recovery was slow and incomplete emotionally. I can not remember which was next, but I think she had a mild stroak which slightly imparied her left hand and leg. She was recovering slowly, but her spirit for life was weekened by the first two deaths, so she was lax about doing her exercises to stingthen her imparied limbs. Next, the third and last son, who lived next door to her and saw her a lot, died. This by now was about all she could take, She gave up,shejust sat barely eat and when she did it was coffee and donuts. She lost weight and wieghted about 85 pounds. Then she fell and broke her hip. Dispite her age, they operated and put her hip back togeather. She went from bad to worse after this and just gave up, and her end came soon.

This woman love flowers, she collected more every spring and eventually the
surrounded her house. Her Begonias were beautiful as well as her roses. When
she was able, she spent hours in her garden. Planting, weeding, furtilizing,
watering and admiring beauty.

She loved at one time to stay up late at night and watch latenight movies.
He also liked to work crossword puzzles. In earleir years, before her eyes
went bad she cratched all kinds of things.

She worked for years as a seemstress for Baxter's Laundry, I suspect doing
alterations and making repairs to cloths. Months before she retired the place
closed, so for about a year before she got Social Security she got
unemployment.

My Grandmother never learned to drive a car while my Grandfather was alive, but when he died in 1959 and my grand mother yet a working women needed to learn. It was my dad that taught her. She had no problem learning and did fine.

Syrina was a strong willed woman, but was so in a rather quit way. Somewhat
reserved in her expresion. She did show favoratism with family members. I do
not know her reasons why. It was esecially true with Uncle Myrles family, but
then it my be because they lived next door to each other and that they were
always there for her. It may have been her way of returning their efforts. For years, Aunt Doris cooked dinner for her family and Gram. Aunt Ellen too was a favorite. What ever any of her reasons were, It made no difference to me and I never senced any disfavor. She was a fine grandmother to me.

I remember she had a very small dog that appeared to be some kind of cocker
mix, with long black ears and cut off tail. The dogs name was Sparky and was a female, black on the top (back, head and ears) and white on the stomach and
chin. Sparky lived to be old, 14 or 15 years. She was a happy dog alway eager
to greet wagging the tail she did not have, her rear wiggleing in it place.

Gram was a small woman, barely five foot tall, and as she aged and did not take calcium or eat enough dairy products, her back hunched over makeing her even shorter. She wore glasses and had catarats removed at one time. She had bunyons on her feet, enough so that the large toe on both feet pushed outward and crowded her other toes. She said this was from wearing too small of shoes when she was younger. The price of vanity. The knuckles of her hands were large and she said that was from cracking her knuckles when she was young. Her hair never turned completely grey, there was always a trace of the once dark hair, If was as well thick and course. For years, as long as I can remember, she went once a week and had it done. She wore dentures. She had a skin cancer removed from her face in later years. All of her brothers and sister died from canser.

went bad she cratched all kinds of things.

Doris family is having thier Christmas party to day out to Chucks. Their house is like a picture in Good housekeeping, so nice. They have had open house. They aren't far from Cathy's. I was out there and stayed all night. Chuck has lots of room for flowers if the Deer don't eat them.
Will soon be Christmas, how fast this year has gone. I wonder what next year will be. Quite a lot of Flu around here now. we have had all of our shots. Burt has his other eye operated on, the Dr said it wasn't as bad as the other one. Maby he can see good again. I hope he is off now until after Christmas that is good for him. The new store that is being built is sure going up fast, takes all between Broadway & Sherman from the express way to the road Margaret lived on would be on the right side of Broadway as you are going to town, will be some place. Wont have far to go shopping. Elaine you will have to exercise my writing can't write very good anymore. I have been feeling good. I go for a blood test again in January some time the first part. Margaret is up to Jim's Jerry was going to be up there and wanted her to come up. She has her appartment decorated pretty, got a nice tree. She had club here last Tues, was her turn, had a good time, every one came. Still miss you being with us, and think of you so often, we had good times together if we did play cards all night ha! ha! Was good times. Play Skip-Bo when Ellen comes out Doris comes over. When Ellen is here and the telephone rings to Myrle's, he says cards again tonight. Some times we send him back some goodies. He is doing good goes to class every times, three times a week and enjoys it. There has been 3 or 4 that have died from there this summer & fall. Grandpa Sias is doing pretty good, he is looking better now, comes to church every Sunday. Most of the time Cathy brings him. or Arv. They are off till after Christmas. Arvie is getting so big taller that his dad, he is such a nice boy. Had a nice time to the Christmas party, every one came all of Phils children was there. I don't feel 90 only at times when my rhumitem acts up. would just like to go out and work in my flower bed. I sure like flowers the more the better. I can't find the last letter you wrote so I don't know if I answered all your questions or not. I got a letter from Violet they are all well, most of her family live near her now. You knew that Laurel passed away? She fell and broke her hip and then pneumonia set in.
I was sure lucky, I know God was with me all the time, so many never get over it when they break one. My hip healed up good once in a while it will bother me some depends on the weather. I had a real nice Dr. How are the people on Drent road? Haven't saw Joan in a long time. Doris usto see her up to Punch'es once in a while. Did you hear from Ethel? I don't remember if I told you or not. She wanted Dollies adress she called here, she lives with Bonnie now. She said "they wouldn't let her live alone any more and that they wont let her do anything. Bonnie is still working at Punches. her grandson was with her the day she called here, I talked with him, she couldnt get your address so I had her have him come to the phone. She was quite feeble. I think her hearing is bad. How are you feeling. Your eye no better and your breast is that O.K. now? How is Darlene's Sugar & her eyes. Edna said Burt had been doing pretty good with his sugar.
