John was the son of Herman F. Smith and Pinkie Lyons Smith, and the husband of Mary Lou Smith. John resided at 401 West Twenty-Fourth Street, Wilmington, Del. He served as a Captain with the Headquarters Company, 103rd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army during World War II. John was killed in action in Steige, France while directing tank fire against machine gun positions. He served in the Army for three years and one month and was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.
