Harry F. DeMean, 44, passed away Sunday, June 9, 1940, from a self-inflected gunshot wound at his farm home. He had become despondent after developing health problems.

Funeral services were held in Wednesday, June 12, in West Liberty. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Harry Frederick DeMean was born May 8, 1896, in Palo Alto County, the son of William and Minnie (Schneider) DeMean. The family moved to a farm in Muscatine County near West Liberty in 1908. He received his education in the West Liberty schools. He married Louise Frieda Thomsen on January 20, 1915, in Iowa City. Together they farmed the DeMean family farm. They were the parents of Louise and Harry. He was an unusual lover of home and family, his ready smile and cherry greetings will be missed, not only by his family, but by his neighbors and friends and all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife, Louise; one daughter, Louise (Louis) Wiese of West Branch; one son, Harry DeMean at home; his parents, William and Minnie DeMean of West Liberty; four sisters, Anna (Walter) Osborn of Atalissa, Hazel (Harry) Grathwohl of Waterloo and Clara (John) Maher and Minnie (Harry) Jensen, both of Davenport; and one brother, William DeMean of West Liberty.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Gilbert DeMean.
