Russell G. Rhodes was born May 13, 1917, in a sod house southeast of Dresden, Kansas, to Ralph Raymond and Zeta Ruth (Taylor) Rhodes. Russell passed away Sunday, September 1, 2013, at Decatur Health Systems, Oberlin, Kansas.

Russell grew up on the family farm south of Dresden, Kansas. He attended grade school and high school in Dresden, Kansas through his junior year. He then attended Decatur County High School, Oberlin, Kansas, graduating in 1936. Russell attended Fort Hays State University.Hays, Kansas and taught one year at Dresden (KS.) Grade School. In 1942 he joined the US Air Force. While in the USAF he attended the College of Great Falls Montana, earning his bachelor of science degree and then furthered his education completing studies in meteorology with the Air Force, where he served as a meteorologist until his retirement in 1968. He was stationed in Canada, Korea, Germany and several locations throughout the United States during his career. Russell also attended Boise State University.

On September 16, 1946, Russell married Margaret Wilton in Norton, Kansas. She followed him through his career and they shared many hobbies through the early years, including fossil and rock collecting, camping, bird watching, and wine making. He once built a boat and rode it down the Missouri River with Margaret and three of his children.

After serving in the military for 26 years, Russell and Margaret moved back to Dresden, Kansas where they farmed for 14 years. After retiring from farming, Russell became the caretaker of the Dresden, Shibboleth and Adell, Kansas Cemeteries for over 10 years and served as the mayor of Dresden, Kansas for many years. He went to North Platte, Nebraska and completed the Master Gardener program. He loved gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor. Russell was an avid reader. His greatest joy was studying health and nutrition and sharing information to help others. He was known as "Uncle Buck" to all of his nieces and nephews.

Russell was preceded in death by: parents; brother, Ralph "Buzz" Rhodes; sisters, Salome Gallatin, Marjorie Myers, Janet Steffen, Carol Rhodes and Patty Rhodes and son-in-law, Rick Madsen.

Burial was in the Dresden Cemetery, Dresden, Kansas.
