MURPHYSBORO - Lucille Rosalie (Crain) Thurman, 94, formerly of Gorham, passed away at 5:35 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, in Murphysboro, after an extended illness.

Lucille was born Dec. 21, 1918, in Gorham, daughter to the late Burl Floyd and Jennie Mae (Senteney) Crain.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Richard "Skin" Thurman in Sikeston, Mo., Nov. 26, 1938. Clarence preceded her in death Oct. 10, 1970.

Lucille was a protestant and had formerly attended the Methodist Church in Gorham. She was a homemaker and had been employed as an assistant cook at the Mississippi Valley School District in Gorham. Lucille was a former village clerk for Gorham, and had been a member of the Gorham Booster Club and various other organizations including having served as secretary, treasurer for the Goodbread Cemetery Association many years. She was a member of the Murphysboro VFW Post 7190 Auxiliary where she served as secretary, treasurer and district president. She was a member of the Murphysboro American Legion Paul Stout Post 127 Auxiliary where she served as secretary, treasurer, and other local, district, and state positions until her health declined in 2008. She was also a member of the DAR.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Thomas Shields of Rockwood; one son, Floyd Richard Thurman of Murphysboro; one granddaughter, Tina (Jason) Jarrett of Murphysboro; one grandson, Thomas Christopher (Sara) Shields of Jackson, Mo.; one sister, Lula Jane (Crain) Feller of Fairfield; one sister-in-law, Dorothy (Parmley) Crain of Murphysboro; five great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Allison and Ashley Jarrett all of Murphysboro and Emma and Erin Shields of Jackson, Mo.; two dearly loved nieces, Shirley (Feller) Conard and her husband, Dennis, of Flora, and Janet (Crain) Overturf and husband, Roy, of Murphysboro; several nephews and other close friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers. Burl S. and Robert L. Crain.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Larry Gilbert of Murphysboro United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Garden of Memory near Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
