Edith was probably born about 1540, possibly in Calne, County Wiltshire, England. Her parentage is unknown. She married about 1564 in Calne, John Bent, from Weyhill, Penton Grafton. He must have been a fairly successful farmer, or "yeoman", because his estate was substantial for the times. Edith and John had ten known children, born in Penton-Grafton. John died in 1588. Edith must have returned to Calne after his death, because her will, dated June 15, 1601, says she is Edith Bent, widow, of Calne. The will was proved on September 30th, same year. If she was living in Calne at the time of her death in 1601, she was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary The Virgin Church in Calne.
