Robert was born in Penton-Grafton, Hampshire and baptised at Weyhill Parish on September 29, 1566. He also married at Weyhill, on October 13, 1589, Agnes Gosling. Robert and Agnes had ten known children, and six of their baptismal records are to be found at Weyhill. Robert was a farmer, or "yeoman", and a leading citizen of the parish. He is recorded as serving on juries, as churchwarden, as overseer of the poor and as surveyor of ways. His landholdings amounted to 45 acres, a large amount in those times. His son John succeeded him in his holdings. He died shortly after he wrote his will and was buried at Weyhill on July 29, 1631. Robert's estate was inventoried on August 30, 1631 at Penton Grafton, the value of the estate was 107 Pounds.

In his will he mentions, among others, his sons Robert & John; grandchildren Robert, William Peter & Agnes, all children of John; son-in-law William Baker and wife Dennis; daughter Jane, wife of Robert Plimpton and her children Robert, Thomas, William, Jane & Elizabeth; sisters Agnes Street & Joan Noyes, wife of William; Agnes & Mary Bent, daughters of Richard Bent.
