Charles L. "Crit" Crittenden, Sr. passed away peacefully in his home in the early morning hours of September 4, 2013. He lived a life of selfless service to others. Never known to utter a cross word, always a southern gentleman in every encounter, he left a legacy of kindness and generosity.
Born in Deltaville, Virginia in 1920 to James Tyler Crittenden and Lillian Mae Hutchins, Crit is the fourth of seven children. He was raised in Hardyville, Virginia until he joined the Army Air Corps at the outbreak of World War II and was assigned to Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah. It was there that he became the staff assistant to General Berman, the base commander and where he met Ruth Fowers, then the secretary to General Berman. She became the love of his life and they were married on June 1, 1943.
After the war, he was honorably discharged as a captain in the Army Air Corps and they settled in Ogden and started their family. Together they were blessed with three children, 13 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. His beloved Ruthie passed away on October 12, 2003. His family was the joy and center of his life.
Born a Southern Methodist, Crit joined with Ruth as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1956. Their marriage was sealed for eternity and their children were sealed to them in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on May 16, 1958. Crit led an active life in the Church, serving in various capacities including Young Men's President and as a member of the bishopric in the Ogden East 35th Ward. He and Ruth served for many years as ordinance workers in the Ogden LDS Temple.
After discharge from the military, he became a territory representative for the Fuller Paint Company in Utah, traveling throughout the state. In 1958, he invested in his own business and started Crittenden Paint & Glass (Now Crittenden Glass) in Ogden. He sold the business to his son Lee in 1977 but remained actively involved until earlier this year. Ruth worked with him in the business until her retirement. He always believed that he knew more about people than he did about either paint or glass and that was the secret to his success. The progress of the business allowed him to be a supporter of many worthwhile causes in the community.
He was also a founding shareholder and a member of the board of directors of the Security National Life Insurance Company in Salt Lake City, Utah, attending the most recent board meeting just a few weeks ago.
Crit took an active interest in Ogden, believing that there was no better place to live. He served on the Planning Commission for many years and was a member of the Executives Club. He loved Weber State University sports and was a president of the Wildcat Club. He attended Weber State football and basketball games as often as he could.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Fowers, two of his brothers James and John, and his sisters Helen Crittenden and Johanna Greer. He is survived by two of his brothers Howard and Tommy, as well as his children C. Lee (Pam), Chris Holden (Tom), and Gary (Cathy), as well as all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
