Obituary: Laura A. Spear was born March 20, 1845, at Mariah, Essix county, New York, died at her home in Esbon, Kansas, January 21, 1905, at the age of 59 years, 10 mouths and 1 day. Her parents were industrious and successful people in the business world and active in the church, being esteemed by all who knew them for their work's sakeShe was of a family of three. Her brother, James Spear, of Red Rock, Oklahoma, and sister, Mrs. Dr. Ward of Esbon, survive her. Her parents preceded her to the better world about 25 years ago.She moved from New York with her parents when about eight years old to Emerl Grove, Wisconsin, where they resided about four years and then removed to Bucannan county, Iowa. She received her education at the Female College of Independence, Iowa. She taught school for ten years in her home county. .Our deceased sister was married to W. H. Hughson ot Otsego, Iowa, October 12, 1867. Mr. and Mrs. Hughson moved to Jewell county, Kansas, twenty-four years ago where they have since made their home. The only child of this union is our sister and esteemed neighbor Mrs. O. F. Flesher. Our bereaved friend became a member of the Christian church at Esbon in 1894. In this fellowship she has been held as a faithful member to the time of her death. Her health has been poor for over twenty years. About four years ago she fell and hurt herself very badly. From that fall she never fully recovered, has not been able to walk without a support since. Notwithstanding her sore affliction she was a patient sufferer to the end. Her last sickness only lasted a few days. Pneumonia and heart trouble is what laid our bereaved one low in the arms of death. All was done that medical aid could do and every attention of friends and loved ones was greatfully extended but, alas! to no avail, death has claimed our esteemed one. Our consolation is in the Lord who is the resurrection and the life. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.”The funeral services were held in the Christian church at 1 p. m., Monday January 23. The sermon was preached by the writer and the burial took place in the Prairie Home grave yard.H. J. Kennedy.(Esbon Times, Esbon, Kansas, January 26, 1905)
