A native of Rocky Mount, Virginia, he and his wife, Dorothy, lived in Mt. Vernon, New York, for over 40 years.
Sam was the first African American trolley car driver in New York City. He was a Deacon of Abysinnia Baptist Church, New York and a faithful member of New Life Presbyterian Church where he volunteered with the Meals On Wheels program for over 10 years.
He was a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather and faithful Christian.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy; his son, Sam Lee Young, Jr. and his wife Vicky and daughter-in-law, Peggy Young, all of College Park, GA; two sisters, Carrie (Charles) Leavelle and Juanita Booker, both of Rocky Mount, VA; four grandchildren, Stacy, Tasha and Barney Young, Jr., all of College Park and Darryl Young of Ossining, NY; four great grandchildren, Marquise and Anya Young and Michel'le Tyler and Darryl Williams; four sisters-in-law, Helen Young, LuVerne, AL. Arlene Brooks, Pittsburgh,PA. Juanita (Millard) Jones, Columbus, OH and Hazel Ferguson, Wurtz, VA; one brother-in-law, Arthur Board, Rocky Mount, VA; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
