Elmer Leland Dust

Elmer Leland Dust, 70, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Manistee, passed away Jan. 14 in Zephyrhills. Memorial services were held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Zephyrhills, Jan. 17 with the Rev. David Bostedt officiating. Cremation followed.

Mr. Dust was born in Branch to George Edward Dust and Bertha Amelia (Zweigle) Dust. Both parents and a brother, Walter, preceded him in death.

He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. He married Vera McClellan on Jan. 12, 1946. They were married 52 years and had three children, Dennis (and Hazel) of Milford, Diana (and Michael) Doriot of Traverse City and Gregg (and Laura) of Manistee. They had four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also had three brothers, Clarence (and Shirley) of Ludington, Everett (and Willa Jean) of Ludington and Ernest (and Arline) of Livermore, Calif., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He attended grade school at Sweetwater School in Branch, later going to Custer High School, from where he graduated in 1945. After graduation he worked at the Star Watch Case factory in Ludington until he was inducted into the U.S. Army. After being discharged from the service he went to work for the A&P Food Store in Ludington as a produce manager. Later he was promoted to manager of the store in Ludington, then Scottville, then in April of 1956 he became manager at Manistee. He was an A&P manager for over 22 years. In February 1969 he quit the A&P and he and his wife bought the former Wissner Store at Fountain Road and U.S. 31. They ran the store for over three and a half years. He went to work in July 1972 for Martin Marietta Chemicals in Manistee and retired from there in November 1990. Since then he and his wife had enjoyed their winters in Zephyrhills.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Manistee, where he served as an elder.

Memorial services for Mr. Dust will be conducted Saturday, June 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Manistee with the Rev. Philip Krieger officiating. Memorial envelopes will be available at the church.
